Over two thirds of people would like to see the Government invest more in four not two wheels according to a new poll by Motorpoint.
A new online survey by the UK’s largest independent car retailer, which has a network of branches across England, Scotland and Wales, found 76 per cent of people would like to see the proposed £5bn of additional funding earmarked for cycle lanes announced during lockdown being spent instead on fixing the faults on the country’s roads. Some 1,032 people took part in the poll on the Motorpoint website – www.motorpoint.co.uk.
A recent report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance put the cost of repairing the current damage to UK roads at £9.79bn, with potholes alone costing insurers up to £22.5m per year in compensation claims. While the proportion of roads deemed to be in a ‘poor condition’ fell to 10 per cent in 2018/19, the number of miles of roads in need of repair still stands at 22,600 miles.
Mark Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer of Motorpoint, said:
“The results of our poll clearly recognise that while more cycle lanes are welcome, the sheer number of miles of roads that need fixing cannot be ignored and, as the UK comes out of lockdown, the priority surely has to be rectifying our roads so that the wheels of business can move freely once again.”
Motorpoint currently has over 5,000 low mileage, nearly new cars and light commercial vehicles available from over 30 different manufacturers.
